1. Q: Could you briefly introduce yourself and the work you do?
Mr Louis Tay
Mr Tay Bok Hock Louis, PB, BBM
Head, Technical/BIM Department
B. Bldg (Hons) Construction Management & Economics

A: I am currently the Head of Technical Department of Lian Soon Construction Pte Ltd. I have more than 30 years of experience in construction and project management with a wide range of projects including the building of residential, commercial, industrial and educational institutions. I was awarded the Public Service Medal and Public Service Star in 2000 and 2005 respectively.

In my current capacity, I oversee the implementation of BIM technologies and processes on construction projects at the organization level and project level. Lian Soon has been implementing BIM technologies and processes to all their ‘live’ construction projects since 2011 and have been successful.

2. Q: How long have you been using BIM technologies/tools? Could you share with us your personal struggles or challenges with BIM and how you overcame them?
A: My  BIM journey began in 2010 and started a pilot ‘live’ project using Punggol Green Primary School by converting the 2D-CAD drawings to 3D BIM model for Architecture, Structural & MEP disciplines. We took the challenges as an opportunity for the BIM Team to learn new technologies to improve productivityin drafting and site construction.Customized training road maps were designed for the individual staff to upgrade their skills during the implementation and transition phases. The Peer sharing sessions had helped us to build confidence amongst the team members.

3. Q: Where do you see BIM in Singapore in the next 3 to 5 years?
A: We envisage the evolution of a ‘customized platform’ which will integrate 3D BIM Model and the Construction Processes, to manage & control workflow across the entire life cycle of the building. This platform shall provide the integration of most common applications including mobile field applications, real time updates and reporting, document dissemination and control.
